Challenge #6 - Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

Jeeves and the Tarte aux Pommes by [archiveofourown.org profile] scioscribe [Jeeves & Wooster, Bertie/Jeeves]
Wherein Bertie tries to be Jeeves's ideal gentleman, resulting in mixed metaphors, a Shakespearean book club, ties sabotaged in reverse, romantic epiphanies, and music with the tonal quality of a dying lion.
Bertie tries to fit himself into the mold of someone Jeeves could love. Hit me right in the heart.

Revelations by [archiveofourown.org profile] ClinicalChaos [Shadowhunters, Alec/Magnus]
Magnus Bane has been taken. Alec Lightwood is not merciful in his quest to take him back.
Relentless, competent Alec is everything to me. WIP waiting on the last catharsis chapter but still extremely satisfying.

Separate Ways by [archiveofourown.org profile] PepperPrints [Star Wars/The Mandalorian, Luke/Din]
With Moff Gideon defeated and the Darksaber reclaimed, the rumours of newly named Mand'alor Din Djarin spread through the galaxy... along with the stories of the Child he carries with him. Determined to meet him, Luke Skywalker arrives on Mandalore -- but before he can get any closer, he has to prove himself worthy of Mandalorian standards.
I love this?? 80,000 words and it felt like a second to me.

Also many, many Stargate recs here on [community profile] stargateficrec.

Challenge #9 - Brag about yourself.
Some things I created recently and am proud of!

1. My new ability to vid. Latest vid for Stargate Atlantis.
Password: atlantis

AO3 | YouTube | Vimeo | tumblr

2. Writing a 10k word fic
Rearrange [Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit, Legolas/Gimli]
Prince Fili’s betrothal to the elf prince of Mirkwood causes Gimli many problems, not least of which, he’s beginning to strongly suspect that Legolas may be his One.

3. Continuing my self-indulgent Star Wars prequels feels that are still with me after decades series
Amendment [Star Wars Prequels, Gen]
Qui-Gon had never spared much thought for the reports Obi-Wan wrote up for their missions over the years, save for vague feelings of fondness for Obi-Wan’s unflagging dedication and gratitude that the archivists no longer bothered him about them. What point would there have been in reading over the bare, prosaic facts when he’d been there in person? Now, looking at Obi-Wan’s self-deprecation set down in plain black and white, Qui-Gon rather thought that might have been a mistake.

Mostly I've been reading The Old Guard fic so I should probably write up some fic recs for that (so much good fic!) but I also finished a couple published things.

Finished Reading:
Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. This was one of my favorite books growing up and I re-read it because I'm considering writing an AU using the forced obedience conceit. (Quick fic rec: Obedience by [archiveofourown.org profile] Sohotthateveryonedied [Gen, DCU, Tim Drake]). I'm really sad that they replaced the cover! I mean I know I shouldn't judge a book by its cover but the original cover was a really beautiful painting style. The new one is kind of cartoonish which is maybe better for the intended young audience but the original was just really nice!

Empire of Gold by S. A. Chakraborty. This was the last book in the Daevabad trilogy and it was great. I recommend this series to anyone who likes politics and fantasy in their books.

Now Reading:
A World Lit Only By Fire: The Medieval Mind and the Renaissance: Portrait of an Age by William Manchester. Why so many sub-titles?? A World Lit Only By Fire is a great title by itself! But as the sub-titles tell you, it's a popular history of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. We had to read this for one of my history classes back in high school and I kind of always meant to re-read it. Now is a good time since I'm into The Old Guard. It's interesting but I do find it sometimes confusing because the dates jump around a lot.

False Value by Ben Aaronovitch but I think this may disappear from my Kindle before I finish it again.

Failed Out:
The Passage by Justin Cronin. Good writing but didn't get to the plot stuff I was interested in quickly enough and too many characters I didn't like. Still have it because I'm not sure what's going on with the library returns.

Up Next:
Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen or maybe a re-read of The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl. Or something else entirely.

I was watching Minority Report on Netflix and it reminded me that they tried to reboot it as a TV series a few years ago so I've now bought myself another half season of a sadly cancelled show that I couldn't find streaming anywhere.

Minority Report was clunky but it had a lot of potential! I enjoy the premise and the futuristic aesthetic and Vega's revolving rainbow of fabulous leather jackets. Also Nick Zano was great in this. I like his Minority Report character better than his character on Legends of Tomorrow, although I'm probably at least a couple seasons behind on Legends.

This also led me back to Almost Human, another sci-fi show sadly cancelled after half a season. John Kennex: Capricorn who loves danger. The show deserved to continue on that alone in my opinion. The lesson here is that Fox should not be allowed to option good sci-fi shows. I remember Almost Human at least spurring some good fic. I found One of the Crazy Ones by [archiveofourown.org profile] starandrea in my bookmarks and it's 100k so that should get me through the weekend.
smilebackwards: john with left yellow stripe (Default)
Some enjoyable WIPs as we all quarantine. I love the feeling of seeing an email update for a WIP I'm reading. I like to have at least one at all times to look forward to. Right now I have three.

you're in my blood like holy wine by [archiveofourown.org profile] magneticwave | Game of Thrones | Sansa/Jon
Regency AU. Sansa is my favorite and she's amazing in this. Her political calculation is *chef's kiss*. Fabulously written. Warning for references to rape.

All Amok by [archiveofourown.org profile] WerewolvesAreReal | Star Trek | Gen, Spock
SPOCK! I love angsty Spock fic, okay? I genuinely thought for several chapters that this was written by [archiveofourown.org profile] kianspo who I also subscribe to and who wrote Don't Stop Believing and I was shocked when I realized it was written by [archiveofourown.org profile] WerewolvesAreReal who I followed for awesome Temeraire fic. And now for awesome Star Trek fic. Spock takes drastic measures when he finds he won't be able to make it back to Vulcan for pon farr. Warning for suicide attempt and suicidal ideation.

Asunder. by [archiveofourown.org profile] outpastthemoat | Star Wars Jedi Apprentice | Qui-Gon/Tahl, Obi-Wan
I actually haven't read the Jedi Apprentice series but I read so much Star Wars Prequels fic referencing it that I feel like I have and I love Jedi Master Tahl by osmosis. Qui-Gon doesn't die, but he still leaves Obi-Wan behind. Melancholy but hopeful.

And I may actually post part of my Gimli/Legolas Lord of the Rings WIP which is so close to being done--please let me finish it, I don't care about the plot holes anymore--for motivation and I almost never post WIPs.
smilebackwards: merlin in a castle arch (merlin)
I enjoyed Merlin a lot. Although it should not have held off on the magic reveal for so long. Thankfully, we have fic for that.

The Crown of the Summer Court by [archiveofourown.org profile] astolat - Arthur/Merlin
The Elves come to Camelot and Merlin needs a champion. Obviously, that champion will be Arthur and there are a lot of feelings about it. Merlin gets to show off his magic and Morgana is awesome.

Three Tasks by [archiveofourown.org profile] syllic - Arthur/Merlin
One of Arthur's jobs is to be Royal Arbiter for Suitable Suitors' Disputes and it is truly hilarious. Until it's Merlin's hand being vied for, then it's not quite so funny. To Arthur at least. I got immense joy from this.

Three Castles by [archiveofourown.org profile] rageprufrock - Arthur/Merlin
Arthur is betrothed to Merlin and is extremely enamored. But there's a bit of a wrench.

For Your Information by anon on LJ - Merlin & Uther, Arthur/Merlin
Modern AU. Arthur comes out and Uther isn't sure how to handle it. Somehow Merlin becomes his gay tutor.
smilebackwards: john with left yellow stripe (Default)
Lord of the Rings is one of my forever fandoms and Gimli/Legolas is one of my OTPs. The Hobbit on the other hand I didn't really care for but there is some great fic.

From One Age to Another by [archiveofourown.org profile] determamfidd - Lord of the Rings, Gimli/Legolas
Legolas and Gimli each go home after the end of the war and end up explaining their relationship to their fathers. Lovely.

Degrees of Separation by [archiveofourown.org profile] blossomwitch - Lord of the Rings, Gimli/Legolas
Outsider POV of Gimli/Legolas. The dwarves are confused about why Gimli is so irritable after the war. Then he and Legolas are reunited and everything is cleared up.

Small Kindness by [archiveofourown.org profile] Elsajeni - The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings, Gen
A poignant and perfect bridge between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. I'm very sad that Legolas and Fili and Kili didn't get time to be friends. I live for the coda.

Something Blue by [archiveofourown.org profile] Lapin - The Hobbit, Bilbo/Thorin
Bilbo and Thorin have what they both think is a marriage of convenience. A lot of miscommunication and mutual pining.

An Eye for Quality by [archiveofourown.org profile] Linelenagain - The Hobbit, Bilbo/Thorin
A re-working of the movies with Bilbo as Bella and everything about it is amazing. Bella's relationship with Fili and Kili is my favorite thing and the cultural worldbuilding for the dwarves is fantastic. And the courtship. Thorin is such a failboat. It's fabulous.

Also counting this for the Sunshine Challenge since it serendipitously aligns.
smilebackwards: john with left yellow stripe (Default)
My favorite fics of the past couple weeks.

Don't Stop Believing by [archiveofourown.org profile] kianspo - Star Trek Reboot, Kirk/Spock (with Pike/Spock and Uhura/Spock)
This is a longfic that I was following years ago on LJ and I'm pleased I now rediscovered the finished version on AO3. Spock is my favorite and this is a fantastic character piece in his POV. Extremely competent characters with low self-esteem who are oblivious to how others see them is a thing that I enjoy and this is that to the max.

Ins and Outs by [archiveofourown.org profile] misbegotten - Good Omens, Aziraphale/Crowley
Like the rest of fandom, I love the 6000 year slow burn of Crowley and Aziraphale. A lovely missing scene for the last episode with a lot of good lines. Crowley calls Aziraphale angel a lot and that's very important to me.

Watching Through Windows by [archiveofourown.org profile] helvetica_upstart - Schitt's Creek, David/Patrick
I love amnesia fic and I kind of especially love amnesia while in a relationship fic because you get a lot of angst and both established relationship and developing relationship stuff (See also, this amazing Les Mis Enjolras/Grantaire fic: The Five Year Plan by [archiveofourown.org profile] Neery). This is beautifully written.

[community profile] snowflake_challenge Day 8

In your own space, post self-recs for at least three fanworks that you created.

Victory Braid & Wedding Cup [Lord of the Rings, Legolas/Gimli]
Gloin POV of Gimli & Legolas. These aren't a series, they're just me basically writing very similar themes in different variations because I vastly enjoy outsider POV, cultural differences, meeting the family, and family acceptance. I may or may not be writing a third version of it. I enjoyed writing these a lot.

The Restorer: Vol 2 No 13 [A Study in Emerald, Gen]
A reverse John Watson companion to the original. I'm proud of this one because I managed some to do some nice formatting to mimic the canon! And I think I matched the tone pretty well.

Double Blind [Daredevil, Matt/Foggy]
Matt's secret identity causes confusion with the Avengers. This is by far my most popular fic and as of right now it's actually the most kudosed Daredevil fic on AO3 which is like wow and I feel can only be evidence of The Claw. Anyway, Matt's a dork and this was essentially me trying to cobble together a hilarious anon comment thread on the kink meme into a coherent story so the joy it gave me wouldn't be lost to the depths of the internet.

[community profile] snowflake_challenge Day 2

Rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create.

Yes! I love reccing!

The Uses of a Sandwich by [archiveofourown.org profile] laurakaye [Star Wars Prequels, Gen]
A few months after being taken as a Padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi faces a challenge: meeting his Master's first apprentice.
This is a lovely story of kid Obi-Wan growing up with Qui-Gon. Qui-Gon's first, now-knighted padawan has some concerns, expresses those concerns poorly, and then there is self-recrimination and healing. I think Obi-Wan deserved this big sister in his found family.

Small Kindness by [archiveofourown.org profile] Elsajeni [The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings, Gen]
Fili gives a little snort, as if he doesn't believe that, but he doesn't press any further, either. Instead, he hands the crumpled note back through the bars and says, "Burn that, will you? And..." Another moment's pause; then the dwarf seems to make up his mind. "And come back and speak to me, if—"
"If I hear any more word of your uncle," Legolas finishes for him.
Fili grins, teeth glinting white in the darkness. "If you've a mind to," he says, "news or no news."

A poignant and perfect bridge between The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. I'm very sad that Legolas and Fili and Kili didn't get time to be friends.

By daybreak we'll be gone by [archiveofourown.org profile] storm_petrel [The Losers, Jensen/Cougar]
Once you go into the woods, you don’t come back out again; or, how Franklin Clay got himself a pack.
The one where they're all werewolves except Jensen and that causes problems right up until it doesn't anymore. I've read this at least half a dozen times.

I actually don't think I've commented on some of these and I should go do that. I also need to finish up Yuletide reading and get some recs out for that as well!
smilebackwards: john with left yellow stripe (Default)
What I'm Watching - Grimm - Season 1 (Rewatch) )

What I'm Reading - Exit Strategy by Martha Wells )

And, as always, I'm reading a ton of fic. This month I'm reccing John/Rodney fics for [community profile] stargateficrec which is one of my favorite comms. I feel kind of bad because I usually only rec the minimum 2 stories for a month, but it's because I'm saving up for future months! I have at least 3 this time. Every time I think I'm going to run out of fics, luckily I discover more.

Also, the Yuletide tag set is complete so people are starting to post letters and those are great fun to read and see about writing any treats from.
