Challenge #1 - Update your fandom information

Transformative Works Policy: I have blanket permission for podfic, translation, art, etc. Please link me to anything because I want to see!

Current Passion: I have fallen hard back into Batman/DCU and Star Wars. I'm rewatching animated Batman and the new Star Wars stuff (Kenobi, Andor). I'm always at least low-key in these fandoms along with Lord of the Rings, Stargate, and X-Men. Honorable mention for Shadowhunters and The Old Guard.

Challenge #2 - Write a promo, manifesto or primer for your fave character, ship or fandom.

TIM DRAKE! My beloved 3rd Robin. He definitely fits my character type of smart, heroic, seems straight-laced but is actually insane, with bonus lack of self-preservation skills. This boy said Batman is doing a Bad Job and I am going to fix him.

I've written fic and have 3 more Tim focused WIPs destroying my brain. I have many fic recs. I have multiple tumblr tags because at some point I gave up on trying to organize DC stuff, it's impossible: tim drake, timkon, batfam. I am forever screaming into the void about how they refuse to re-print the Red Robin trade paperbacks.

And here's a favorite vid. Tw for blood but it's comics/art, not hyper-realistic. )

Please yell about Tim with me ♥

Life has been ridiculously busy. Things are finally slowing down a little and I've been doing some reading and TV watching.

Finished Reading:
Vicious by V.E. Schwab
Vengeful by V.E. Schwab
The Rain in Portugal by Billy Collins (poetry)
Dealing With Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede (re-read)

For TV, I got HBO Max for a month so I could catch up on the few things:

BBC Ghosts - I love this?! Ghosts from across the centuries are stuck together in this old house and it's just a lot of fun. I can't believe there are 3 seasons and we still don't know how some of them died!! I mean the seasons are only like 6 episodes but tell me what happened to Robin and Kitty! Apparently there is now also an American reboot as is traditional with half of BBC shows but idk if I care to watch it.

Titans (season 3) - This is honestly the weirdest show. Like the plot, the pacing, the constant back and forth of we're family so i forgive you anything/you betrayed me and you're dead to us, the strangest casting and characterization of Bruce Wayne. But I have waited forever for live action Tim and Kon and I do love Donna and Tim.

Young Justice (season 4) - I didn't realize we were getting season 4! Half the same cast as Titans but it is SO DIFFERENT. DC animation continues to be way superior to live action. Between this, Titans, and the new Wayne Family Adventures (a blessing), it's like whiplash between these characterizations. As always, I will take what I like and throw out the rest. I'm back writing in Batman/DCU and it's hilarious to see some people's takes of 'people shouldn't write without reading the comics!' Like I hate to tell you, but there is no consistency in anything in the DCU. Let it go.

Mostly I've been reading The Old Guard fic so I should probably write up some fic recs for that (so much good fic!) but I also finished a couple published things.

Finished Reading:
Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. This was one of my favorite books growing up and I re-read it because I'm considering writing an AU using the forced obedience conceit. (Quick fic rec: Obedience by [archiveofourown.org profile] Sohotthateveryonedied [Gen, DCU, Tim Drake]). I'm really sad that they replaced the cover! I mean I know I shouldn't judge a book by its cover but the original cover was a really beautiful painting style. The new one is kind of cartoonish which is maybe better for the intended young audience but the original was just really nice!

Empire of Gold by S. A. Chakraborty. This was the last book in the Daevabad trilogy and it was great. I recommend this series to anyone who likes politics and fantasy in their books.

Now Reading:
A World Lit Only By Fire: The Medieval Mind and the Renaissance: Portrait of an Age by William Manchester. Why so many sub-titles?? A World Lit Only By Fire is a great title by itself! But as the sub-titles tell you, it's a popular history of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. We had to read this for one of my history classes back in high school and I kind of always meant to re-read it. Now is a good time since I'm into The Old Guard. It's interesting but I do find it sometimes confusing because the dates jump around a lot.

False Value by Ben Aaronovitch but I think this may disappear from my Kindle before I finish it again.

Failed Out:
The Passage by Justin Cronin. Good writing but didn't get to the plot stuff I was interested in quickly enough and too many characters I didn't like. Still have it because I'm not sure what's going on with the library returns.

Up Next:
Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen or maybe a re-read of The Dante Club by Matthew Pearl. Or something else entirely.

Part 3 of Surveillance.

Summary: Stay alive, Jason had said, first and foremost. That is literally the bar in this family. / It’s a low bar. Tim refuses not to clear it. (Or: Tim's new family tries to keep him safe as he adjusts, but things don't quite work out that way.)

Sequel to Surveillance. But not really the sequel I intended to write so there may be a part three.

I've been watching a lot of TV and movies as usual but I haven't posted about any of it.

Justice League Action
What I most enjoyed lately was Justice League Action. I have very little interest in the live action Justice League stuff because I find it weird and overly dark but I love Justice League animated stuff. Action is...not nuanced. The pilot was pretty bad. But, I mean, it's a kids show, it's not really meant for me. Regardless, it got a lot better? Some of the story ideas were quite interesting (powerloss! bodyswap!), just it's hard to develop things when the episodes are 10 minutes long. I grew up with the original Justice League animated show and they did multipart episodes that were like movie length.

Anyway, I like the art in Action and Kevin Conroy voiced Batman which is always extremely important to me. Also, the whole thing is pretty hilarious. I feel very certain this show was written by millennials. It's that kind of humor. Which is to say, my humor. Green Arrow has to fight velociraptors. There is a train heist IN SPACE. Everyone is very Flash-casual with their villians. And Batman is central to the whole thing which is what I care about. He's a good mentor to the younger League members. Everyone in the League is obsessed with having his approval. And he gives it to them! He validates them!! This is a good Batman.

It's all on Hulu until DC probably takes it for their separate streaming service which I apparently need to watch Young Justice, argh.

Other stuff I've watched:
  • Star Wars: Rebels - Seasons 1 & 2 - A good space family. I have seasons 3 & 4 to watch now. Apparently this will include THRAWN? I need that 'was I just supposed to find this out for myself' gif set.
  • The Expanse - Season 3 - SO GOOD. I'm glad it was rescued and it will be on Amazon which I have so I can watch season 4 immediately when it comes out.
  • Lucifer - Season 4 - I actually would have been okay with this as an ending but I'll take season 5.
  • Humans - Season 3 - I didn't like where the end of this season was going so I'm okay it was cancelled.
  • Santa Clarita Diet - Season 3 - This I AM NOT OKAY was cancelled. This season made me laugh so hard.
  • Good Omens - Mildly obsessed with this like the rest of fandom but strangely I have little desire to read or write fic
  • X-Men: Dark Phoenix - I thought this was fine. I mean, I don't really care about any of the movies post First Class, but I didn't think this was worse than the others. Idk why critics panned it so hard.
  • Red Sea Diving Resort - I thought this was going to be in theaters and then it was on Netflix? Anyway, it was good although some of it was certainly hard to watch.
  • Probably other stuff I've forgotten

Title: Surveillance
Rating: T
Fandom: Batman, DCU, Young Justice
Characters: Tim Drake, Jason Todd, Bruce Wayne, Lex Luthor, Selina Kyle
Word Count: 7037
Warnings: None
Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Jason Never Dies, Civilian Tim, Found Family, Batfamily Feels, Tim Drake-centric
Summary: Tim knows antagonizing Lex Luthor wasn’t exactly his safest move but the point is really driven home by the bullet to the shoulder. (Or: The AU where Jason never died and Tim is a civilian who contributes to crime fighting by taking surveillance photos and leaving them on the desktop of the Batcomputer.)

My longest running wip, finally complete!! I really think this has been in progress over a decade because I remember copying it over from back when I used MS Word and also writing it in various homes and airports. Hopefully it's not super uneven due to that but I don't think my writing style has changed hugely. Except I did manage to flesh it out a bit more which is my continuing struggle. I really wanted to hit 10,000 words but I'm just not good at longfic and I decided that was arbitrary. Maybe there will be a sequel because I do want to write more about Tim settling into the Batfam and joining Young Justice.

Also, I would like to take a moment to beg DC for my Tim Drake movie/TV series (I will take anything at this point, please, he's always skipped and he's my favorite) and to reprint the Red Robin trades now that I could afford them.
